MESA's Submission to the Justice Summit:  The Role of the Judiciary

Issue Recommendation
Judicial Activism
  • Some judges decide cases to accomplish social goals
  • Judges are ill-equipped to understand social issues, since their legal training does not focus on social research methods.
  • Establish a "citizen judicial review board" to evaluate judge performance and conduct
Political Court Action
  • Governments who wish to further their political goals fund legal action groups, such as LEAF to accomplish political objectives.
  • Cease government funding of legal action groups
